Standard precautions

Standard precautions are the basic processes of infection control which will prevent the transmission of infection and include:

  • Regular Hand hygiene before and after patients
  • Effective environmental cleaning
  • Use of environmental barriers such as plastic coverings on chair headrests and difficult to clean areas such as triple syringe buttons
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment and sterile disposables
  • Wearing of appropriate protective equipment when cleaning instruments
  • Appropriate handling of contaminated waste
  • Appropriate handling of sharps
  • Wear closed shoes
  • Immediately immerse or bin soiled instruments after usage appropriate management of spills of potentially infectious matter
  • Immunize / Vaccinate all DHCP
  • Appropriate reprocessing of reusable instruments
