PGLA Finalis sutures are synthetic, sterile, absorbable braided sutures made from a copolymer of 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide. The empirical formula of the copolymer is (C2H2O2)m(C3H4O2)n. PGLA sutures are available undyed or dyed purple (D&C Violet No. 2, colour code 60725). PGLA sutures are uniformly coated with poly(glycolide-co-lactide) (30/70) and calcium stearate. PGLA sutures are available in various gauges and lengths, with or without stainless steel needles of different types and sizes. PGLA sutures comply with European Pharmacopoeia requirements for "Sutures, Sterile, Synthetic, Absorbable, Braided" and US Pharmacopoeia requirements for "Surgical Absorbable Sutures" (with the exception of occasional slight oversizing in some gauges).

Q: How long does it take for PGLA Finalis absorbable sutures to dissolve completely?

A: The gradual decrease in tensile strength and ultimate resorption of the PGLA suture occurs through hydrolysis, where the copolymer is broken down into glycolic and lactic acid and is eventually absorbed and eliminated by the body. Resorption begins with a decrease in tensile strength, followed by a decrease in volume. The rate of adsorption of PGLA Finalis sutures is predictable, however, the exact time may vary depending on the patient's individual healing process.
