This approach is based on a geometric modification of the prosthetic connection, aiming to enhance both the biological and mechanical stability of the implant.

Definition of Platform Switching

Platform switching refers to the use of a prosthetic abutment with a smaller diameter than the implant platform. Unlike the conventional configuration (platform matching), where the abutment and implant have the same diameter, the inward offset of the abutment creates a circular gap between the two components.

This shift relocates the implant-abutment interface — a potentially inflammatory zone — towards the center, thereby moving it further away from the crestal bone.
